The Gathering

As the big day grew closer, the buzz surrounding the event reached an impressive level, especially for a hotel as relatively unknown as the Blackwater. Whoever was in charge of the public relations push (I have a feeling it was Rita Pearson, the manager) had done a good job. Even some of the locals I have spoken to recently remembered people talking about it, even if they all originally thought it was a just hokey publicity stunt.

The event started on the afternoon of Friday the twenty-ninth of October, 1982. Guests arrived and were treated to a welcome speech by Marcus, who went into a little of the house’s history.

After this, guests were allowed to settle into their rooms, unpack, and ready themselves for an evening meal that was to be held in the large ground-floor dining hall. Excitement was in the air, and the guests all seemed to be having a good time. A tour of the building followed, and then the dining hall was again opened up as an entertainment area, complete with alcoholic beverages, before everyone retired for the evening.

It wasn’t until the next morning, when the guests all met for breakfast, that word began to spread of certain ‘happenings’ during the night.

Some guests told of hearing strange things, and some swore they even saw people who should not have been there; one woman was certain a man had been standing outside of her ground-floor bedroom window, peering in. Supposedly, that lady left the next day, terrified at what she’d seen, and did not return.

I think it is fair to say that most—if not all—of the gathered patrons were not really expecting to see anything supernatural, and had probably been focused on having a fun weekend. However, after that first night, it is said that the mood began to change, with many people wondering: what if this place really is haunted?

According to reports, the second day progressed with more occurrences and experiences, all fleeting, but enough that tension and even excitement grew.

While Vincent was initially a fan of what Marcus was trying to do, he explained it was the Saturday when he began to seriously suspect that Marcus had some ulterior motive for the weekend, and that it was building to something that Vincent wanted no part of. Indeed, Vincent claims he even tried to confront Marcus about his worries, but was given no time, with Marcus reacting angrily to anything he said.

And if the previous night had some creepy occurrences, then Saturday night ramped things up, with more sightings and incidents reported to have taken place. Also, three guests were assumed to have fled in the night. However, police would go on to report that those people were never found; whatever happened to them remains a mystery. Panic levels rose and it took a speech from Marcus the following morning at breakfast to settle everyone’s nerves, which he managed to do.

And so Sunday, Halloween, continued in a similar vein. But it is the third night that will live in infamy.
